Sif and Sustainable Ships explore mobile shore power solution at Maasvlakte 2 Terminal
Sif is proud to partner with Sustainable Ships, a maritime hub with tools and expert support to simplify regulations and speed up decarbonisation, to explore the feasibility of a mobile shore power solution with battery storage at the Sif terminal on Maasvlakte 2 in Rotterdam.
With decades of experience and a strategic location on the Dutch coast, Sif plays a critical role in the European energy transition. Their facilities are designed for large-scale offshore projects and directly support the development of renewable energy infrastructure.
Sif has committed to ambitious ESG targets, including a clear focus on reducing its carbon footprint. Among these goals is a strong alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal 7: affordable and clean energy. In support of this, Sif has launched a dedicated program to investigate and ultimately implement a shore power installation for seagoing vessels. This partnership represents a meaningful step within that broader initiative.
As part of the collaboration, Sustainable Ships will deliver a comprehensive techno-economic business case, assessing technical, financial, and regulatory feasibility.
The goal is to evaluate whether a flexible, mobile shore power solution can support emission reductions for vessels moored at the terminal, without the need for fixed shore power infrastructure. This could provide an agile and scalable alternative for ports and terminals seeking to comply with upcoming environmental regulations, such as FuelEU Maritime and EU ETS.
This partnership reflects the shared ambition of both organizations to accelerate clean energy innovation, not only at sea, but also at the shore.
