World's largest crane vessel transports piles to Johan Sverdrup oil field

apr. 26, 2018

The Thialf, the world's largest crane vessel, is transporting piles to the Johan Sverdrup oil field for the construction of the 2nd platform, the Drilling Platform.

The Johan Sverdrup oil field is the largest offshore oil and gas project in the North Sea in recent years. The 2nd platform is currently under construction. For the purposes of this project, the Thialf – the world's largest crane vessel, owned by Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) – is on its way to the site with the piles required for the second platform.

Johan Sverdrup phase 1 comprises four platforms:

Riser Platform (RP). This is the world's largest platform. This platform weighs an impressive 27,000 tonnes. Installation work on this platform is now complete.

Drilling Platform (DP). This platform is currently being installed.

Production Platform 1 (P1). This platform will be installed next, following completion of work on the DP.

Living Quarters Platform (LP). The final platform.

Further information on the platforms can be found here. Sif is responsible for the piles of all the jackets and the jacket legs for both the Riser Platform and Production Platform 1.
